Welding Lab Information
Our weld testing facility goal is to insure our clients that only
individuals who can pass the criteria set by approved standards and
codes will receive qualification. Our facilities also have the capability
to qualify procedures and write up welding procedure specifications (WPS).
Welder Qualification Procedure
The client will furnish written procedure specifications (WPS) that they want the welder qualified on.
Only welders named on the list send by the client will be tested.
On arrival at the testing facility the welder must provide a driver’s license and social security card so
he can be signed in for the test. He will be given a sign-in slip containing his name, client’s name, type
of test and process, and weld test number. He will then be sent to the lab.
The weld test number will be stamped on both ends of the test coupon. Then the welder will be instructed
on which booth to use and the process and type of filler metal to use. The tester shall notify the inspector
upon completion of root before proceeding with filler metal. If root bead passes visual inspection,
the welder will be allowed to proceed with fill and cap.
If cap passes visual inspection, the completed test coupon will then be placed in the designated area
and allowed to cool down. After coupon has cooled, the required number of straps shall be cut to code
specifications and the test number will be stamped on each strap. The straps will be prepared for bend testing.
Test results shall be recorded in the sign-in book. After that, the welder qualifications will be filled out,
signed and stamped by CWI. Copies will be made and kept on file. The originals will be given to the client.

Mechanical Testing: The mechanical testing and acceptance criteria shall comply with that specified in the acceptance criteria reference of provided as part of the qualification test procedure. The Test Supervisor shall interpret the results.
Retests: Unless otherwise specified in the test procedure, if the welder performance test fails to meet the requirements, a retest may be allowed under the following conditions.
Immediate Retest: An immediate retest may be made consisting of two welds of each type and position that he welder failed. All retest specimens shall meet all of the specified test requirements and acceptance criteria as the original test weld.
Retest After Further Training or Practices: A retest may be made, provided there is a documented evidence that the welder has had further training or practice. A complete retest of types and positions failed shall be made.
